Amy Giles to receive Buxtehude Bull on 8th November

Buxtehude. Eminent visitor from the USA: American author, Amy Giles,will come to Buxtehude. The celebrated writer will receive the €5000 remunerated youth literature award, the Buxtehude Bull 2018, for her debut novel this coming Friday, 8th November. The official award ceremony will take place at the Halepaghen stage, Konopkastraße 5, beginning at 7pm. Giles is to be celebrated for her novel, “Now is Everything”– published by Munich publisher, cbj-Verlag (400 pages, translated from English by the Hamburg author, Isabel Abedi).

The Buxtehude Bull will be presented by the Buxtehude mayor, Katja Oldenburg-Schmidt. The laudatory speech will be held by forensic medicine specialist (UKE hospital, Hamburg), Prof. Dr. Dragana Seifert. TV presenter, Susann Atwell, has confirmed she will moderate the evening. The evening’s framework leans on one of the most central themes within the book: violence within families. Buxtehude resident, Angela Glüsing (BSV) will interpret this theme through dance; educator, Thomas Rupf, together with a representative from the Buxtehude Department of Youth Affairs, will discuss domestic violence.

Before the award ceremony, in addition to public events, Amy Giles will also be visiting Buxtehude pupils to talk with them about literature and to read from her winning book. The first public event will take place on Wednesday, 6th of November, from 7pm: together with her translator, Isabel Abedi, Amy Giles will host a lovely evening in the Buxtehude library, Fischerstraße 2. This gives the opportunity to get to know the author and her book and talk directly with the writer. Entry: €5,00 (in support of the Buxtehude Library Support Association), pupils/students: free. The BULL-evard brass plate, in front of “Der Stoffladen B.M.”, Breite Straße 9, will be ceremoniously unveiled on Thursday, 7th of November at 3:30pm. Translator, Isabel Abedi, will also attend. This event is public and those interested are very welcome to attend and personally get to know the author.

Tickets for Wednesday evening, 6th of November at 7pm in the Buxtehude library and for the award ceremony on Friday, 8th of November on the Halepaghen stage may be purchased at the Buxtehude library and in Buxtehude’s Service Center for Culture and Tourism, Breite Straße. 2.
